The Families in Transition
program offers the following services:
One-time
Assistance
Families and individuals faced with eviction, foreclosure, homelessness
or utility shut-off may be eligible for a one time assistance grant
to help deal with their immediate crisis. Families must provide proof
of need, such as an eviction notice, past due rent notice, utility
shut-off notice, statement from a shelter, or a self-declaration of
homelessness. Clients must also show proof of income and social security
cards. Supportive Housing Services
Families who encounter homelessness may also receive longer-term assistance
through supportive housing services. A Family Services Specialist works
closely with them to develop a stabilization plan that may include long-term
rent assistance and help with medical and certain work-related expenses.
Each family develops a plan for working with West CAP staff and other
resources to achieve their long-term goals. back to top Housing
Choice Vouchers
Households that are eligible for the Housing Choice Voucher program
in their county receive vouchers to pay rent costs.
Households
are
required to pay 30% of their income towards rent, and Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) pays the rest.
Potential participants apply and are put on a waiting list. Eligible
names (from the top of the waiting list) are then invited to attend
tenant briefings, which provide detailed information about program
opportunities
and requirements. Community
Development Block Grant
The Community Development Block Grant program in Dunn County assists
eligible households in making essential safety and energy efficiency
repairs to their homes. Applications are made through the Dunn County
Housing Authority at West CAP’s Menomonie office. This program
also provides funding for special community projects. For example, construction
of the Emergency Disaster Shelter in Wheeler is partly funded with a
Community Development Block Grant. back to top Homebuyer Assistance Program
The Homebuyer Assistance Program helps families and individuals move
from renting to homeownership. Program participants receive counseling
in budgeting skills, credit repair and restoring credit worthiness, along
with information about home financing options and any supportive programs
that may be available to them. The program helps participants successfully
move through the steps needed to find and purchase their own home. Grace
Place
Transitional Housing for Single Women and Families with Children. Grace Place is a partnership between area organizations, including the
United Way, Salvation Army, local churches, and West CAP. Grace Place
provides a transitional housing shelter for single women and families
with children in the St. Croix Valley area.
The shelter is located in the former convent building of St Anne’s
Catholic Church in Somerset. It includes three single rooms and two double
rooms. Transitional housing may be provided for 30-60 days. Residents
are offered supportive services and counseling by local agencies, organizations
and clergy. back to top
